Spanish Language Summer Camp for Kids: How to Choose the Right One

A Spanish language summer camp can give your child more speaking practice in two weeks than a school year of lessons at home. But there are three very different types of camp. This guide explains each one, what it costs and how to pick the right one for your child.

Benefits of a Spanish language summer camp for kids

Spanish is one of the most spoken languages in the world, and it is useful in school, travel and later work. Children also pick up a language more easily when they can speak, listen and play rather than only study.

The benefits of learning Spanish early are long-lasting: better listening, more confidence with other languages and a head start at school. A Spanish language summer camp for kids gives children what weekly lessons cannot: many hours of real practice, friends to speak with and a reason to use the language. It also builds independence, which parents often say is the biggest change they notice.

The three types of Spanish camp for kids

1. Online Spanish camps

Children join one-to-one or small-group video lessons during the holidays. They are flexible and usually the cheapest option. The drawback is the setting. Children are at home, in their own language, so there is little real-life practice.

2. Local day camps

These are camps near your home that use Spanish in games, crafts and songs for a few hours a day. They suit younger children, often from 4 to 8. Teachers are often native speakers, but the rest of the day is in your own language.

3. Residential camps in Spain

Children travel to Spain and live at the camp. They have lessons every morning and practise Spanish the rest of the day. This is the fastest way to improve, because Spanish is all around. It also costs more and needs a child who is ready to be away from home.

Which camp is right for my child?

The best Spanish language summer camp for kids depends on their age, their goals and how ready they are to be away from home.

How our Spanish camp for kids works

Naranja Camp is a residential camp in Valencia for children aged 10 to 16. Here are the facts parents ask about most:

  • Lessons: 20 hours of Spanish a week with qualified teachers.
  • Groups: Classes of up to 12 children, matched by level after a short test on day one.
  • Method: Games, songs and real conversations, not long grammar drills.
  • Levels: Complete beginners to advanced speakers.
  • Staff: One monitor for every 8 campers, on site day and night.
  • Certificate: Each camper gets a certificate with their level and progress.

Our levels roughly follow the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages, so you can compare them with school grades. This is the Spanish camp for kids that we would want for our own children: small classes, clear levels and plenty of real practice.

What a day looks like

Mornings are for Spanish class in small groups. After a Spanish lunch and a short siesta, afternoons are for the beach, sports and workshops. Evenings bring talent shows, beach games and movie nights. See the full schedule in our summer camp in Valencia guide.

Is it safe to send my child abroad?

This is the most important question, and you should ask every camp. Look for a clear staff ratio, trained and checked staff, insurance, medical care and a plan for airport arrival. Our guide to safety at a summer camp in Spain has a full checklist of questions.

How much does a Spanish language camp cost?

Online lessons usually cost the least, and residential camps in Spain cost the most because they include accommodation, meals and activities. Our camp costs €2,800 for two weeks, or €5,300 for four weeks. For a full breakdown, read how much a summer camp in Spain costs.

Checklist: how to choose a Spanish camp

  1. Is the age range right for your child?
  2. Are classes grouped by level, and how big are they?
  3. How many hours of Spanish are included each week?
  4. Who teaches, and what is the staff-to-child ratio?
  5. What is included in the price, and what is extra?
  6. How does the camp keep parents informed?
  7. What happens in a medical emergency?

Frequently asked questions

What age is best for a Spanish language camp?

Local and online camps suit children from about 4 to 8. Residential camps in Spain work best from about 10, when children are ready to be away from home. Ours is for ages 10 to 16.

Does my child need to know Spanish first?

Not at our camp. A short level test on day one places every child in the right class.

How long should a Spanish camp last?

Two weeks is a good start. Four weeks gives children more time to move up a level.

Are online Spanish camps worth it?

They are flexible and cheaper, but there is little real-life practice. They work best as a first step before a residential camp.

Can my child go alone?

Yes. Most children come on their own. A staff member meets them at Valencia airport, and they make friends quickly.
